  1. PixFolio - Windows Image Viewer and Catalog Manager (Shareware)

  7. PixFolio (formerly ShowGif) is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a
  8. variety of bitmapped graphics formats and maintain multiple catalogs of
  9. images. Version 1.03 is being distributed as Shareware for $25.00 plus $4
  10. Shipping and Handling ($7 outside of US and Canada) by the author,
  11. Allen C. Kempe. You are free to use PixFolio for a 30 day period. After that
  12. time, you are expected to register your copy and pay the $25.00 registration
  13. fee (plus shipping & handling).

  15. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  16.     BMP -   Windows Bitmap
  17.     CLP -   Windows clipboard file
  18.     DRW/GRF - Micrografx draw and graph files.
  19.     EPS -   Encapsulated Postscript with imbedded TIFF preview images.
  20.     GIF -   CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format
  21.     ICO -   Windows Icon
  22.     IFF -   IFF/LBM (Amiga) used by Computer Eyes frame grabber.
  23.     IMG -   GEM/IMG (Digital Research).
  24.     MAC -   Macintosh MacPaint files.
  25.     PCX -   Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush
  26.     RLE -   Windows Run Length Encoded
  27.     TGA -   Targa
  28.     TIFF-   Tag Image Format. Most formats including 24 bit color
  29.             are supported.
  30.     WMF -   Windows Metafile.

  32. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  33. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.
  34.  
  35. The major feature of PixFolio is the ability to build catalogs of
  36. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  37. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  38. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a
  39. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.
  40.  
  41. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  42. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.
  43.  
  44. PixFolio version 1.03 is Shareware (see the accompanying file "PIXREGST.ME").
  45. PixFolio may be freely distributed on Bulletin Boards so long as all files
  46. are included along with this file.

  75. File Menu:
  76.     New File - create a blank image suitable for pasting from the
  77.            clipboard.
  78.     Open File - Open a new file for viewing.
  79.     Save File - Save an image, possibly in a different format.
  80.     Move/Copy file - Move or copy a file.
  81.     Delete - Delete a file.
  82.     Print - print all or part of an image.
  83.     Export - Export the contents of a catalog for input to a database
  84.          or spreadsheet.

  89.     Select catalog: Create, delete, select or rename an image catalog.

  120.     Change the speed of a GIF animation sequence.

  122. Other:
  123.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a marquee can be
  124.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse
  125.     button can be used to draw a stretch marquee where the selected
  126.     image rectangle is copied.
  127.

  129.     Context sensitive help is included for all menu items.
  130.  
  131. ******** Equipment Requirements **********
  132.  
  133. While PixFolio will execute in a minimal Windows installation, for example, a
  134. 286 with 2 megabytes of memory, program operation will be severely inhibited
  135. by a lack of memory. On such a configuration, large bitmaps, especially 8 or
  136. 24 bit images may fail. Other applications could be adversely affected as
  137. well and fail with unexpected UAE's. Actual results will vary depending upon
  138. the amount of memory used by other applications running concurrently.
  139.  
  140. PixFolio was developed and tested on a 20-MHz 386 with 8 megabytes of memory.
  141. It is recommended that PixFolio be run on a machine with at least 2 and pre-
  142. ferrably, 4 megabytes of memory. Running in 386-Enhanced mode will also
  143. make available the benefits of virtual memory.
  144.  
  145. The display of images containing more than 16 colors requires that you have
  146. a Super VGA or better video display and a 256 color Windows device driver in
  147. order to display the full range of colors in the image. However, PixFolio
  148. incorporates dithering functions that will allow display of a 256
  149. color image using a 16 color driver such as the standard VGA driver. Such
  150. operations are slow and the results are not as good as if you have a video
  151. display capable of displaying 256 colors.
  152.  
  153. ********** Program Limitations *************
  154.  
  155. PixFolio has no limit on the number of catalogs that can be created or the
  156. size of these catalogs except those restraints imposed by your file system
  157. and te amount of available memory. However, the following points should be
  158. noted:
  159.  
  160. 1. The size of a catalog is limited by the amount of disk space where it
  161.    resides or 32,767 index entries. Catalog records are variable length and
  162.    depend upon the type of image and how big the comments are.
  163.  
  164. 2. PixFolio may encounter difficulty with extremely large images, those in
  165.    excess of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is particularly true of color images
  166.    and even more so by 24 bit color or gray scale images. This is primarily
  167.    due to the increased memory requirements.
  168.  
  169. 3. While PixFolio and Windows supports 24 bit color and gray scale images,
  170.    the display of such images using a video driver that only displays 256
  171.    colors, can result in some lengthy delays whenever windows has to realize
  172.    the 24 bit RGB data to an 8 bit palette. It may take 15 to 20 minutes to
  173.    realize a 640 x 480 image depending upon the speed of your machine.
  174.    Dithering a 24 bit image to 256 colors can take more than an hour in some
  175.    cases.
  176.  
  177. 4. The support for GIF animation in PixFolio requires large amounts of free
  178.    memory. GIF animation files with a large number of frames or overlays may
  179.    unexpectedly fail when PixFolio runs out of memory.
  180.  
  181. 5. PixFolio has not been rigorously tested in a network environment. The
  182.    affect of network operations and more than one user accessing PixFolio
  183.    files concurrently cannot be predicted.
  184.  
  185. 6. Not all graphics formats are supported equally with respect to reading and
  186.    saving a file. For example, not all of the compression options are
  187.    currently supported for saving TIFF images. GIF images can only be saved
  188.    in GIF87a format. Likewise, some of the more obscure or obsolete formats
  189.    such as 4 color CGA formats for PCX cannot be written although they can be
  190.    read.
  191.  
  192. 7. The author has not been able to test PixFolio with printers that print
  193.    in color. The new HP LaserJet "Intellefont" driver does produce good
  194.    quality halftones from color images without dithering.
  195.  
  196. 8. The rendition of Windows Metafile (.WMF) images has not been extensivly
  197.    tested with a variety of files. Use at your own risk.
  198.  
  199. 9. The implementation of Micrografx .DRW and .GRF files is not rigorous. Some
  200.    features of these files are not supported. Unless you have Adobe Type
  201.    Manager or scalable typefaces, the rendition of fonts used in these files
  202.    may not be optimal when Windows matches fonts.
  203.  
  204. 10. Other program limitations, if any, can be determined by accessing the
  205.    online context-sensitive help.
  206.  
  207. ******** NOTE **********
  208.  
  209. If you have previously loaded Showgif (the former name of this program), you
  210. should edit your WIN.INI file changing the section name [Showgif] to
  211. [PixFolio]. Catalog file names, e.g. SHOWGIF.CAT need not be renamed but if
  212. you do, be sure to rename the index file, SHOWGIF.CIX also!
  213.  
  214. ****** Installation and Getting Started*******
  215.  
  216. If your copy of PixFolio was received on a distribution diskette, the
  217. installation can be done from within windows by running "SETUP" from drive
  218. A: or B: (whichever is appropriate). Otherwise, the following installation
  219. procedure should be followed:
  220.  
  221. It is suggested that the files which constitute PixFolio be placed in their
  222. own subdirectory on your hard disk. These files are:
  223.  
  224.     PIXFOLIO.EXE
  225.     PIXFOLIO.HLP
  226.     SPIN.DLL
  227.     METER.DLL
  228.     PIXDLL.DLL
  229.     PIXIODLL.DLL
  230.     PIXHELP.DLL

  233.     PIXGIF.DLL
  234.  
  235.     The following file is a Microsoft supplied DLL that provides common
  236.     dialog services and other functionality. You should place this file in
  237.     your Windows\System directory. Future versions of Windows may contain
  238.     newer versions of this file.
  239.  
  240.     COMMDLG.DLL
  241.  
  242. Not necessary for program operation are this file PIXREAD.ME, PIXREGST.FRM
  243. and PIXREGST.ME. PIXPACK.LST is a list of files included in this zip file.
  244. The user guide is USRGUIDE.WRI. It can be printed with Windows Write and
  245. formatted for your particyular printer.
  246.  
  247. Once the above files have been located in the subdirectory of your choice,
  248. start Windows and then use the Program Manager "Add" command to add PixFolio
  249. to the desired program group.
  250.  
  251. When PixFolio runs for the first time, it will establish a section in
  252. your WIN.INI file with program variables. These default options should enable
  253. you to start using PixFolio immediately. Once PixFolio is running you may
  254. access the online Help command for specific instructions and explanation of
  255. PixFolio menu commands.
  256.  
  257. A quick review of PixFolio features and operating procedures can be gained by
  258. reviewing the user guide.
  259.  
  260. ****** Credits ******
  261.  
  262. The author of PixFolio would like to recognize the efforts of Mr. Paul Hachey,
  263. (CompuServe Id 76247,3716) who performed an invaluable service by getting
  264. deeply involved in the extensive testing that went on over a period of months.
  265. Paul is responsible for the design of the PixFolio cover page, Icon and
  266. "About" dialog box and his many suggestions greatly influenced the "look and
  267. feel" of PixFolio.
  268.  
  269. ****** Known Bugs in Version 1.01a  that have been corrected ******
  270.  
  271. 1.  Saving an uncompressed PCX file does not create a file that can be
  272.     read by other programs such as Windows Paint. Try the compressed
  273.     option.
  274.  
  275. 2.  The save IFF file format is not working; the resulting file cannot
  276.     be read.
  277.  
  278. 3.  PixFolio does not properly interpret the image origin bit for
  279.     TGA images. Some TGA images may display upside down.
  280.  
  281. 4.  There is a memory allocation problem. After viewing a GIF file,
  282.     an attempt to view a TGA file will result in a "Local Alloc" error.
  283.     It may be necessary to stop and restart PixFolio to read a TGA file.
  284.  
  285. 5.  The "DIB to Screen" radio button on the default Options dialog does
  286.     not work. The option can still be changed from the Options menu.
  287.  
  288. 6.  If you uncatalog a slide that is displayed in Slide View, the slide
  289.     is not erased from the screen and subsequent attempts to access it
  290.     will result in a UAE.
  291.  
  292. 7.  You may experience UAE's after attempting to read a corrupted TIFF
  293.     file.
  294.  
  295. 8.  PixFolio would fail when attempting to create a thumbnail of a large
  296.     image.
  297.  
  298. 9.  The File Open/Save dialog wil now allow direct entry of a pathname in
  299.     lieu of selecting from the listbox.
  300.  
  301. 10. PixFolio "hangs" when the only item in a Catalog is Uncataloged.
  302.  
  303. 11. Windows crashes after exiting PixFolio. (This problem was introduced in
  304.     version 1.02.) This problem could occur if global memory was compacted
  305.     because while PixFolio was running.
  306.  
  307. ***** What's new in Version 1.02 *****
  308.  
  309. New features in version 1.02 include:
  310.  
  311. 1.  Print contents of a catalog, including the thumbnails or print selected
  312.     entries.
  313.  
  314. 2.  Read MACPAINT .MAC files.
  315.  
  316. 3.  Read imbedded TIFF preview images in Encapsulated Postscript .EPS files.
  317.  
  318. 4.  Dither 256 color images to 16 colors when using a standard VGA driver
  319.     which only supports 16 colors. Or dither 24 bit images to 256 colors.
  320.     An "Auto Dither" option has been added which provides for automatically
  321.     dithering an image for display if it's color resolution is greater than
  322.     your display driver's.
  323.  
  324. 5.  Cut and paste different images with different palettes and/or number
  325.     of colors.

  327. 6.  File and record locking needed for running in a network environment.
  328.  
  329. 7.  Separate, printable user manual.

  331. 8.  The file list in the Build function can now optionally display only
  332.     those images that are not cataloged.

  334. 9.  Support has been added for users of PixFolio using Bernoulli boxes or
  335.     other high-capacity removable media. See the User Guide for details.

  337. 10. "Slide View" has been renamed "Thumbnail View".
  338.  
  339. 11. PixFolio will maintain the original color information. Previous
  340.     versions would reduce color resolution to that of the display whenever
  341.     editing operations took place. For example, you can cut and paste 24
  342.     bit images even if you don't have a 24 bit video display and retain the
  343.     24 bit color data in the image. Likewise, PixFolio will not lose color
  344.     information when working on 8 bit color images and using the standard
  345.     VGA, 16 color driver.
  346.  
  347. 12. The contents of a catalog, less the thumbnail image, can be written to
  348.     a standard ASCII comma-delimited file which can be read by many
  349.     database programs or spreadsheets.
  350.  
  351. 13. Another application can be launched from the Thumbnail view using a
  352.     selected image file.
  353.  
  354. 14.    Support has been added for the Windows MetaFile clipboard format.
  355.  
  356. 15. Date and time in catalog entries will now be formatted per WIN.INI
  357.     (Control Panel - International) settings rather than customary USA
  358.     usage. (See the special note below).

  360. 16. Support added for reading GEM ".IMG" files.

  568. **** Special Notes for users updating from a prior version ****
  569.  
  570. If you are upgrading from a previous version of PixFolio, you may wish to
  571. update the default extensions (via the default Options command) or the
  572. extensions defined for each catalog (via the Select Catalog command) to add
  573. the new extensions for file types ".EPS", ".ICO", ".IMG" and ".MAC" if you
  574. plan to use these file types. Alternatively, you may change these options
  575. by editing the PixFolio section of your WIN.INI file.
  576.  
  577. If you are not using the US standard date and time formats, PixFolio will not
  578. convert dates and times in existing catalogs to the format specified in your
  579. Windows WIN.INI file. However, all new catalog entries will use these formats.
  580.  
  581. PixFolio defaults to WIN.INI for storing program options. All options will be

  584. "PIXFOLIO.INI" which can be located in the Windows directory, the PixFolio
